The Image of Insight: The Use of Visual Metaphors in the Communication of Knowledge | The use of visual metaphors for the transfer of knowledge is a fruitful, but rarely applied communication strategy of experts who strive to convey their insights to others. Although there is a plethora of literature on the benefits of images and metaphors for effective communication, there are only few widely used metaphor templates. In this paper, several possible templates (on four levels) for visual knowledge communication are distinguished and real-life examples of their use are presented. Their advantages and potential risks are addressed. The paper ends with a discussion of future research directions for metaphor-based knowledge visualization. |
